Work Stream II: Interior Design

In the Interior Design work stream, the identification of requirements focused on traveller, operator and train producer needs. This was combined with the results of an assessment of emerging technologies to identify innovation potential. Based on a first evaluation of potential benefits and impact, different novel concepts were developed for plug & play systems (a flexible approach for the wall structure addressing structural and energetic issues for flexibility for ancillaries’ products, e.g. sockets, displays), seating situation and the driver’s cabin. For selected concepts 3D virtual and physical prototypes have been produced.

Innovative plug & play systems

The aim was to design & develop a hyper-flexible and intelligent new “plug & play” system and single solutions for train operators, who wished to be able to reconfigure the interior layout of a train as well as the service offerings & elements that added to passenger comfort.

The work package plug & play presented a new and innovative technology structure that allowed for low voltage, seamless provision of energy, communication, and sensory to act as a cost-effective offering to user and operator demands.

Driven by consumer needs, this grid solution could be easily changed and upgraded. Based on printed electronic foiling that worked as a final ply and the new coil connection, the energy tiles generated a paradigm of interior space usage. Refit dynamics and behavior zoning drove the various energy and sensory tile offerings.

Innovative seats

The work package super-light seat system offered a radical change of seating technology structures and seating flexibility, reducing seat weight by 60%. New structural and informal layout principles as well as a new way of manufacturing and material application were able to create this new standard. Reflecting consumer needs for comfort and privacy, the design solution and functional prototype developed within work package 7 proved this in a sustainable, circular-economic, flexible, and visually new manner.
